USA: Use of antibiotics in animal production to be restricted

Washington (aho) – Various members of the Washington Senate have made a move to initiate legislation to restrict the non-therapeutic use of antibiotics in animal production. With the “Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act”, antibiotics which are particularly important in human medicine are to be excluded from non-therapeutic use within two years of the act being passed.  At the same time, the manufacturers are to be held to publish details of quantities sold and the indications concerned, making monitoring easier for the authorities.

With this move, the initiators of the proposed act are responding to the increase in the number of resistant germs in human medicine.  They stress, however, that farmers and veterinarians in the USA will continue to have a large number of substances available for the medical care of their animals in the future.
